Titanic Troubles: A 5th Level Adventure for 5th Edition
In ages past, wars were waged using massive mechanical creations known as arcane colossi. These towering automatons battled in the fields, armed with countless siege weapons and powerful stone fists. Only the most powerful magics could control them, and only the most destructive spells could break them. After a truly terrible conflict, they were outlawed as all sides saw only complete destruction if they remained in service. Most were disassembled, however, a few were lost in the confusion following the war's end. One such colossus, en route to be decommissioned, was crossing a vast field when the ground beneath it gave way, trapping it in a cave system below. Eventually, with no sun to recharge its magical batteries, it entered a dormant state. Centuries passed, and eventually the legends of the arcane colossi fell into myth and were forgotten.
One day, while excavating an archeological dig site, a gnomish explorer uncovered what he at first believed to be an underground structure. Digging deeper, he eventually uncovered the head of the lost colossus. In doing so, he inadvertently provided it power for the first time in ages as its batteries began to soak up the sun's rays. Once sufficiently powered, it clawed its way out of the earth and resumed its journey, not knowing that the site it was intended to reach had long since been lost. To complicate matters, a great city now lay in its path, blocking its route. Though this would do nothing more than slow the creation down, it would spell the city's doom.
Armies were sent to stop the colossus, but no weapons could pierce its enchanted stone body. Worse, its automated defenses rained fire and steel down on any who strayed too close, while its massive feet crushed anything before it. Now, the rulers of the city have put out a desperate plea for help, offering a king's ransom to anyone who can stop the towering weapon from destroying their home.
